Today Chief Ed Rush (Hartsdale FD) and I, Chief Howard Reiss (Fairview FD), were invited to participate in a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) Fair at the RJ Bailey School. We had the opportunity to discuss with students in grades 4, 5, and 6 just how large a role S.T.E.A.M concepts are in the everyday for firefighters.
We spent time teaching the students how the turnout gear is engineered to protect us in extreme temperatures, how the SCBA allows us to breath in dangerous atmospheres,. Students had the opportunity to learn about how Thermal Imaging Cameras allow us to "see" in smoke conditions.
