 Suppression

The Fire Suppression Units are the front line of the Fairview Fire Department. They maintaining a constant state of readiness to respond to a myriad of emergencies (fire fighting, medical, vehicle extrication, hazardous material, confined space, structural collapse, trench collapse, etc.) which occur in Greenburgh.

The objectives of All Fire Suppression Units are:
Protect Life and Property
Rescue victims
Protect exposures
Confine the fire
Extinguish the fire
Overhaul the fireground

The Fire suppression Units consist of:

  Engine Company Operations

The Engine Company is the basic unit of a fire department. It provides the primary fire fighting agent — water — and the personnel to use it at the fireground.

  Ladder Company Operations

Ladder companies are sometimes called "truck" companies, "hook-and-ladder" companies, "aerial" companies, and "snorkel" companies. Such labels might partially describe ladder company apparatus, but they do not even hint at the planning, personnel, equipment and training that are coordinated in an efficiently operating ladder company.

The ladder company provides access to, and exits for, all parts of a fire building. Ladder company crews also are responsible for removing heat, smoke and gases to allow greater visibility and permit engine company crews to move rapidly and safely within a fire building or exposed buildings.

  Rescue Company Operations

When reporting to a fire, a Rescue Company can be used as an Engine Company to run a hose line or a Ladder Company to overhaul. Many times they are sent in to do a secondary search for victims. Other times they are called to use their tools to cut open doors or walls to gain access to a building.
